Lukas is moving towards the Jeffco Generations Vision. The Jeffco Generations Skills are the essential skills necessary for students to be college and career ready. These include: content mastery, civic & global engagement, self-direction & personal responsibility, communication, critical & creative thinking, collaboration & leading by influence, and agility & adaptability. As Jeffco strives to transform student learning to a higher level of authenticity and real-world application, the Generations Skills provide the framework and support for schools, teachers, and students to actualize our vision for student success.
One way Lukas Elementary is implementing Jeffco Generations is by creating a makerspace in the library. A Makerspace is a place where students can explore interests, especially in the areas of science, computing, and technology. Students work together on projects while sharing ideas, equipment, and knowledge. At Lukas, we will be implementing Project Based Learning within the Makerspace. The Digital Teacher Librarian (DTL) and Instructional Coach will be working in collaboration with teachers to support the innovative student learning practices outlined in Jeffco Generations. The Makerspace will provide materials, technology and a space for students to collaborate and show their higher level thinking through coding, projects and hands on experiential learning. Our Makerspace is an environment where anyone can design and build anything they imagine. Students are encouraged to dream, think, design, invent and build solutions to a variety of challenges. By experimenting with materials and reflecting on their observations, students gain a new understanding allowing them to learn more deeply.
Lukas Makerspace is where people can gather to create, invent, and learn. Funds from this year's Skywalker Sprint and Spring Social, as well as attempted grants, will be earmarked to make this space a reality.
